I’ve been hearing about Twilight for the past few years, and I’ve basically ignored it. I’m not a young adult, and I’ve never really been into vampires (I’m much more of a zombie girl myself). So I figured it had nothing to offer me. Recently, with New Moon coming out and making all of the money in the world, it’s been slightly more difficult to ignore the hysteria.
So while I still don’t think Twilight is really for me, I’ve decided that I shouldn’t dismiss it. Why? Because of the backlash. Dude. I write about and criticize television for a living, but there is nothing that bothers me more than when some smug-ass writers get together and decide to attack something that’s wildly popular because they think it’s beneath them.
Jesus Christ. Twilight is getting millions and millions of 13-year-old girls to read, and dream, and stop worrying about the size of their thighs for a few hours. What the hell is so wrong with that? I understand if it’s not your thing, in fact, I very much suspect that it’s not going to be my thing, but to trash something that is doing more good than harm, just seems silly.
So to that end, I went to the library this week and checked out Twilight. I don’t know if I’m going to read the entire series, but I’m at least going to give it a shot. Although I don’t understand it now, maybe there will be some deep meaning that I’ll get out of these sparkly vampires who sparkle in the sun, and are sparkly. Yeah, I really have no idea what I’m getting myself into, but I’ll be posting updates on my progress!

I will be very interested to see if you still feel that Twilight does more good than harm after you read it. I personally loved them because it is totally my brand of cheese, but I don’t think if I had a daughter I’d want her reading them.
OMG just don’t EVER see the movies. 2 hours of angsty teenagers pouting at each other. Poorly.

Yeah, I’ve heard that it’s beyond terrible. I also just moved it to the top of my Netflix queue.
